A Museum That Evokes Emotions and A Sense of Belonging

How do contemporary museums redefine their relationships with audiences, especially in terms of emotional connection? Professor Lai Ying-Ying from the National Taiwan University of Arts introduces the concept of “museum of emotions,” suggesting that museums should become spaces for sharing emotions, not just places for preservation and display of artworks.

Lai explains that in today’s world, with challenges such as COVID-19 and global warming, museums must serve as agents of cultural actions, using curatorial practices and displays to deliver clear messages and provide guidance to anxious modern audiences. She argues that instead of being the sole interpreters of arts, curators should create opportunities for audience participation and promote collaborative curation.

Lai cites “Is There Anything in Your Family that can be Exhibited in The Art Museum?” at the Museum of Contemporary Art Taipei. The exhibition elevated ordinary objects from everyday life into art through interviews and photography, a prime example of a “participatory museum.” She highlights that every aspect of engagement with the audience is crucial, from spatial design to social media presence, as these elements shape how visitors experience and perceive the museum. Lai also notes that the sustainability of museums depends on fostering connections with their audiences, offering a sense of belonging.

In the age of information overload, museums must allocate resources effectively to offer unique, in-depth experiences that impact both individuals and society. Lai also observes that the relationship between museums and their audiences is shifting from being “object-focused” to “people-centered,” making the development of museums not only a matter of cultural heritage but also an embodiment of emotional connection and social impact.
