The Wonder Base and The Creative Site are designed as shared learning spaces open to all. The inaugural exhibition, The Ongoing Nature, features large-scale art installations set in the spacious galleries, inspired by the interplay between natural landscapes and human-made environments. Reflecting the museum’s rich ecological surroundings, the exhibition encourages visitors to engage in collective art-making. Through art, it provides a space for visitors to connect with their bodies, memories, and the ever-evolving relationship between nature and the environment.

In The Wonder Base, two artists present site-specific works: Mind Map–River by Kuo I-chen and Shift Light Basin by Xin Qi. Mind Map–River places aerial photos of the Tamsui River basin from the 1960s and the early 20s side by side. Visitors are invited to construct miniature buildings on the map, transforming it into a collaborative artwork that blends reality and memory to create a shared vision map. Shift Light Basin shapes expansive landscapes of mountains and rivers using vibrant fabric bags and mixed materials. The artwork immerses visitors in a Lilliputian forest with a mystical atmosphere as they walk through the space. This installation features the dynamic interaction between humans and nature, highlighting the cycles of human intervention and natural recovery.

In collaboration with artists Hsu Shih-hsien, Liu Chih-hung and Goldilocks Production, The Creative Site features Nature Lesson in the Art Classroom. This project uses drawing as a method to connect the body with the surrounding environment featuring workshops on collecting natural materials and environmental fieldwork. These activities inspire nature-based creation and the exploration of unexpected drawing action . During the exhibition, the gallery transforms into a dynamic art classroom where doodling and emotional expression through the creative process embody the exhibition concept.

The artist aims to transform the exhibition space into an experimental site for artistic engagement, employing mixed media, such as vibrant fabric bags, to recreate the “disappearing landscapes.” This setup allows for the observation and documentation of how interactions between nature and human influences evolve, providing a way to observe and reflect on the evolution of nature-existence, transformation, and disappearance.

The artwork Mind Map – River, crafted by the artist from clay and recycled materials, invites viewers to see through the eyes of a giant, navigating the changing landscapes of various eras from an aerial viewpoint. By integrating found materials into the creation, this piece inspires reconsidering the connection between humanity and the earth.

"Nature Lessons in the Art Classroom"

What do you discover on your way to the New Taipei City Art Museum? Nestled near the mountains and the river, this museum not only houses diverse artistic expressions but also blends seamlessly with the surrounding nature. While approaching the park, you might have crossed a stream with soft breezes rustling the reeds and the tall trees along the road swaying gently. These simple, natural moments inspire artists-whether painting on the sandy riverbanks or creating spontaneous artwork from gathered twigs and fallen leaves. Nature lessons are always ready for you to experience right here in this art classroom.

Liu Chih-hung, Meet My River Friend

This project invites participants to engage in sand painting. They will create landscapes simulating riverbeds, wetlands, and mountains through smearing and wiping while observing the interactions between plants, animals, man-made structures, and settlements along the Dahan River. This hands-on, creative experience fosters a strong connection between rivers and everyday life.

Hsu Shih-hsien, Little Botanical Painter

Could a painting experience offer more possibilities when paintbrushes are sourced from the natural environment surrounding the museum and can be easily assembled and customized?
Imagine the easels and tabletops of varying heights as reflections of the park. Find a spot you like, adopt a comfortable painting stance, and use the plant illustration cards for inspiration. With the nature-inspired brush, create a botanical record or an imaginative interpretation of the flora at the New Taipei City Art Museum.
