“Flower n Heart” centers on the work of two Indigenous female artists from different generations—the mother, Yuyoh Peilin, and her daughter, Idas Losin. The two artists use weaving as a shared vocabulary, and through the juxtaposition and co-creation of textiles, paintings, and installations, they explore how “identity” is inherited, shaped, and transformed through the labor of “craft.”
In Indigenous cultures, weaving carries the collective memory of the people and symbolizes the transmission of identity and the flow of matrilineal knowledge, giving this craft a uniquely intricate and profound significance in Indigenous artistic practices. Combining weaving and painting becomes a mode of dialogue between this mother–daughter pair; their collaborative works not only represent the passing on of totemic culture and the craft of weaving, but also reveal the intergenerational exchange and emotional resonance between women through their art. The exhibition title “Flower n Heart” takes “the heart” as a central motif—Yuyoh Peilin’s weaving practice and Idas Losin’s paintings and installations come together to form the pulsing heart of their works, infusing the pieces with energy and sustaining the pulse of both culture and life.
“Flower n Heart” not only presents the two generations of mother–daughter artists in a dialogue enacted through their artistic practices, blending their respective cultural memories, but also responds to “craft” as a vessel for emotional expression and the construction of identity. The interwoven threads and brushstrokes throughout the exhibition bear traces of lived experience and simultaneously offer reflection on matrilineal knowledge and women’s labor, exploring how contemporary female artists weave a creative language of their own across culture and generations, intimately stitching together individual experience and collective memory.
