Upon entering the lobby of the New Taipei City Art Museum (NTCAM), visitors encounter a floor-to-ceiling LED screen. Taking this architectural interface as its departure point, “NTCAM Screening” probes the shifting imaginaries of community, locality, urbanity, and the institution itself—through moving image as both medium and proposition—unfolding distinct visual imaginaries that emerge from the context of NTCAM.
Themed “Seeking Scenery,” this year’s NTCAM Screening showcases five artists who draw inspiration from New Taipei City by observing and capturing diverse urban landscapes that feel both familiar and unknown. Referencing vintage trademarks and factory slogans from the city’s industrial history, Lee Yung-chih’s Industrial Neon employs a digital retro neon sign to create a visual experience that traverses different times and spaces. Huang Hai-hsin’s New Taipei DoReMi begins with morning exercise in a community park, unfolding a relaxed, unhurried rhythm of everyday life. Yang Yu-chiao’s Centuculum Lore Box resembles a talking music box, revealing the intricate details of contemporary existence as it spins. Beginning with the notions of “scenery” and “naming,” Liu Yu & Wu Sih-chin’s Wisdom Eye uses humorous personification and anthropomorphism to craft their imaginative narrative.
