Present of the Future: New Taipei City Art Museum Inaugural Forum

Introduction

NTCAM, grounded in the ethos of "rooted in the local, oriented towards the world," strives to be a key part of Taiwan’s urban cultural landscape. Engaging with global discourse on social responsibility, sustainability, and transregional cooperation, the forum examines how art institutions adapt to evolving cultural and historical contexts. Bringing together diverse voices, it adopts a ‘future lens’ to explore art’s role in fostering dialogue and transformation amid global challenges.

The New Taipei City Art Museum (NTCAM) positions ‘reflection’ and ‘attentiveness’ at its core, underscoring its commitment to social connection and public service. Envisioned as a museum for everyone, it operates on the principle of “local roots, global reach.” Dedicated to the research, collection, exhibition, and promotion of modern and contemporary art and visual culture since the 20th century, NTCAM aims to establish itself as a pivotal component in Taiwan’s urban cultural infrastructure, intertwining local engagement with a global perspective.

On the occasion of its inauguration, scheduled for April 26, 2025 (tentative), NTCAM will host the “Present of the Future: New Taipei City Art Museum Inaugural Forum.” This forum invites scholars from diverse fields to engage in discourse on contemporary museum practices and to explore the vision and roles that a museum can embody.

Aligned with ongoing international discourse in the museum sector on social responsibility, sustainability, and transregional cooperation, the forum will address how art institutions respond to complex social dynamics, evolving cultural landscapes, and layered histories. Emphasizing the need for inclusive and open approaches to knowledge production and institutional practice, the forum gathers diverse perspectives at this pivotal moment, adopting a ‘future lens’ to examine how art and culture can foster dialogue and transformation amid global social, political, economic, and environmental challenges.

The forum is composed of four topics: “The Social Role of Museums,” “New Forms of Art and Cultural Institutions,” “Transregional Perspectives and Artistic Praxis,” and “Collections and Curatorial Practice in Art Museums.” These dialogues will explore institutional connections, collaborative networks, community co-creation, and how artistic praxis engages with contemporary social issues. Additionally, the forum aims to advance cross-regional research and comparative study, fostering a dialogic space within the museum where collections and exhibitions resonate with broader societal narratives.
